It is estimated that more than three million Australians suffer from some form of debilitating chronic pain and that the total cost to the community is in excess of $34 billion annually.
These costs do not accurately account for the unquantifiable damage done to the emotional and psychological wellbeing of the sufferer and his or her family and friends. As such, chronic pain is the biggest under-recognised health care problem in Australia today.
In 2013, The University of Notre Dame Australia launched a new initiative which aims to reduce the impact of chronic pain in our community through research and the education of medical students in the area of chronic pain management.
